Comparing maps to the current framework is a bit tricky, as the parameters on the maps are not exactly the same as the current proposal’s framework. But we can extrapolate, and we ask you to take this information with a grain of salt, as there might be minutia that we miss, and there is a percentage factor of positivity rate that’s no accounted for. The map we chose is based on multiple sources and should be reliable. But we had to alter the proposed Risk Categories to match the map parameters, and the adjusted Risk Categories below are now based on the average of daily cases per 1 million inhabitants.

Adjusted Risk Categories to fit the map:

Risk Category
Green

Passengers with valid proof of negative PCR-test results at the border will be exempt from a five-day quarantine and a second screening.

The daily incidence rate is below 17 per 1 million inhabitants.

Risk Category
Orange

Passengers with valid proof of negative PCR-test results at the border will be exempt from a five-day quarantine and a second screening.

The daily incidence rate is below 35 per 1 million inhabitants.

Risk Category
Red or Grey

Double screening with a five-day quarantine.

The daily incidence rate is above 35 per 1 million inhabitants

By May 1st, if your country has fewer than a daily average of 35 cases per 1 million inhabitants, and you have antibodies or vaccination (and can prove it), you skip quarantine. Again, take these numbers with a grain of salt. There are no maps that we can find that exactly match the new form of travel restrictions.

Quarantine Made Fun

The quarantine for your first five days can be a lot of fun. You are allowed to take your camper/rental car out for excursions and explorations. There are many cottages/cabins that have hot tubs, and many of them rest near excellent hiking trails or points of interest (more on that below). There are also hotels that offer special quarantine offers now, with food and entertainment provided throughout your stay. Quarantine as a visitor in Iceland does not mean staying at a hospital or some medical hotel/institution. If you research the regions in Iceland, you’ll quickly find plenty of points of interest to enjoy during those 5 days.

An Empty Island

Iceland is a sparsely populated island and has long allured travelers with its untouched nature. We at CampEasy travel much around the country, and by avoiding the most commercial destinations, we haven’t found the island crowded by any means. However, there’s always the occasional fellow wanderer passing by during the low season, and you can find some crowds at the most popular destinations at peak season. Not anymore. The island is empty. If you are looking to explore or photograph Icelands’ most appealing aspect, nature, you have a unique opportunity right now.
