What are the best campsites along the Golden Circle?
The Golden Circle in Iceland can easily be driven in one day. However, if you have a campervan and aren’t in a hurry, you can camp along the Golden Circle.
These are great campsites along the Golden Circle
Open all year, the campsite at Lake Úlfljótsvatn is excellent. It’s run by The Icelandic Boy and Girl Scout Association and is very family-friendly. The campsite has excellent facilities and fishing in the lake is permitted at no extra cost for campers. The scouts have all sorts of activities at the campsite during high season
The campsite at Lake Laugarvatn is quite nice and family-friendly. It has a soccer field and a playground, plus it’s close to shops and restaurants. While you’re there, you can visit the Fontana spa.
The campsite at the Geysir geothermal area is in a good location. It’s close to a golf course, it’s within walking distance of Geysir and the hotel. There you´ll find a restaurant, a souvenir shop, etc.
Other notable campsites are Þingvellir, Úthlíð, Faxi Waterfall, and Flúðir.
Going from the Golden Circle to the South Coast
If you plan on driving further along the South Coast of Iceland but want to start with the Golden Circle, you have a few good camping options. After visiting the main stops along the Golden Circle, Þingvellir, Gullfoss, and Geysir, you could, for example, drive to Hvolsvöllur. There, you´ll find a campsite with good facilities, playground etc. If you camp there, you can wake up and arrive at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall within minutes. The campsite at Hvolsvöllur is within walking distance of the village. There you´ll find a grocery store, pharmacy, swimming pool and lots of other things. If you’re interested in Viking history, make sure to visit the Njál’s Saga Center while you’re there.
