Facts About the tunnel
Raufarshólshellir cave’s lava is a result of the Leitahraun eruption. The lava flowed from the east of the Bláfjöll (Blue Mountains) about 5200 years ago. Today, the tunnel’s total length is 1360 meters (4500 ft).
See below some more details:
– The main tunnel is 900 meters (3000 ft) long.
– It is up to 30 meters wide with headroom up to 10 meters high (one of the most wide-ranging lava tunnels in Iceland).
– Near the entrance, the ceiling has caved in, creating three columns of light inside the tunnel.
– At the end, the tunnel branches into three smaller tunnels where lava formations are clearly visible.
Do not forget to feel comfortable while exploring underground lava creations.
